Portrait of a Red House Hen
The number of chickens at Red House has increased lately with the introduction of some more hens for egg laying duties. Production of our free range eggs had stalled at the end of last year due, not only to the winter setting in, but also because the hens were getting on a bit! This led to some unsightly scenes at the egg cupboard by the Oval (where the eggs are sold) when a rare box of eggs was put out. We can all relax at last, as there are now 14 layers gearing up for full spring production. Hopefully supply will keep up with demand.
Our hens have also been treated to a new fence around their run. Although they are still fee range, we are expecting them to be less free ranging than they were before.
