Red House Graffiti
J.M. and P.K. 1863

In many of the hidden corners and less frequented rooms of Red House there can be found small relics, in the form of graffiti, of its human history. This picture was taken in the dusty attics above the main staircase and provides confirmation of the year that the main building was refaced and this section, including Prince Rupert House, was added. Presumably J.M. and P.K. were the joiners who constructed the roof truss upon which their initials are painted. The decorators, W. Walker, L. Hawksworth and W. Bentley must have lent them their paint, as their names and profession appear on a purlin opposite. Also a plumber from Knaresborough, J. Hoy, was in on the prank, as his details appear in the same paint further along the purlin.
