The Cottage
This is the view of The Cottage (Moat Cottage) from the Moat Field. In those days the garden was much smaller and it had a good fence as protection against invading horses. Many of the variously styled windows survived up into the 21st century and Moat North's door is still the same.
Conditions in The Cottage were fairly primitive in the 1930's and even into the 1960's. There was certainly no electricity, heating and cooking was acheived by 2 ranges and 2 fireplaces, one of each at each end of the building. Light came from candles. The outside toilet (which still exists in 2019) is attached to the northern end of the building. We have reports that water was taken from a water butt although there is a water pump to the rear of The Cottage in the stable yard.
