The Red House Stable Yard
This elevation and photo show the difference between the architectural plans of the old stable yard at Red House and what was eventually built. The plans date from 1863 and involved the complete remodelling of that area of the estate. Moat Cottage (seen with chimneys on the left of the photo) would have been drastically redesigned into loose boxes and a saddle room. 8 new horse stalls were to be built to the right of the yard and a coach house and mash house to the left attached to the end of the cottage. The finished buildings and yard (completed in about 1867) were actually smaller than the plan shows and the stables were postitioned to the back and right of the yard. The original stalls and loose box still survive in the right side of the building but these were lost in the left half when it was converted to the school gym. The coach house was built and can be seen with its hipped roof and ivy covered wall on the left. Moat Cottage was left untouched and the existing arch is much finer than the plans proposed. Overall the finished yard is wonderfully asymmetric - so typical of Red House!
