Poppies in the Fields
Out on Scagglethorpe Moor, the land due east of Red House, there are many fields of corn which are coming close to harvest. In the last week the poppies that always manage to grow there have been in full bloom as can be seen from this photo. This is certainly the best time of year for walking or cycling in this area as the wild flowers are at their best and deer, foxes and birds are everywhere to be seen.
Scagglethorpe Moor has a close association with Red House as it was this land that was enclosed by the Slingsbys in the 1760's as a way of increasing the rental income from their estates. The land was also used for grazing by the farmers of Poppleton and they had to be paid a sizeable sum each year as compensation for their loss.
