The Cricket Pavilion under the Beech Hedge
This shot shows the old School Cricket Pavilion which was built in 1923. Its construction was referred to in the school magazine written in August of that year:
"The principal work carried out in Pioneering last term was the Cricket Pavilion, built mostly out of the trees cut down at Nun Monkton in the autumn. It was in use by June and finished by the beginning of July."
Interestingly there is also a reference in a previous magazine (published in January that year) as to how the trees were transported to Red House:
"... last term we cut down some 50 fine young trees, five or six inches in diameter, carried them to the River Ouse, formed rafts, floated them down the river, landed them and housed them safely in barns for the winter."
It was certainly work well done as the pavilion has survived the following 86 years, with only one known renovation in 2000 when the tin roof sheets were replaced and repairs to rotten timbers were made. The final game of cricket it watched over was in July 2001. Now it looks out over horses grazing in the games fields.
