Mr Sayers (ex-headmaster of Red House, Latin teacher and, latterly, groundsman) and Mr and Mrs Maltas probably talking about cricket and Trent College. John Sayers taught at Trent College before coming to Red House. The Maltases sent 3 of their sons from Red House on to Trent all with scholarships.
In the background by the cricket nets is the yellow roller for the cricket square which was always known for being hard to start and, when it was finally making its glacial progress towards the square, equally hard to stop.
