A "New" Pump
After years of dis-use, work is underway to renovate the hand water pump in the old stable yard. This would have provided water for the Victorian Stables when they were built in the 1860's and is marked on old Ordnance Survey maps. We were expecting it to be in a poor state of repair but it was found to be in better condition than the replacement we had lined up for it so the original was cleaned up and put back. Even the non-return valve in the pipe beneath it was in full working order. Our only problem now is finding out where the water source for the pump is. It was assumed to be the sump in the middle of the yard but, when emptied, no trace of the pipe could be found.
