Garden Wall Repairs - Part 2
Back in March this year we began work on restoring the 17th century Garden (or Peach) Wall and we made a report here. Progress over the summer has been halted by a long delay in sourcing the right bricks to match the existing clamps that made up the original wall. These finally arrived at the end of August and so work has moved on to the copings and top courses. These were replaced in the 19th century with wirecut bricks that have, by now, suffered from their exposure to the elements. We are removing the top few courses to be replaced with new clamps for the copings but reusing the good original wirecuts in the wall facings. This process involves quite a bit of gardening as plum, elder and hawthorn trees have taken root in the cracks. Also many snails and hybernating insects have had to be moved along as the dark recesses of the wall provided the perfect habitat for them.
As this is a long section of wall (64 metres), we plan to progress as far as possible until the cold weather sets in before continuing next spring.
