Putting the Pool to Bed
As the nights get colder and the pool struggles to maintain a reasonable temerature, it is time to close it down for the year. This is quite a complex job; the water level must be drained down by 40cm to avoid frost damage to the tiles, the summer covers are wrapped up to protect them from the sun, the steps must be removed and the whole pool is covered with the winter covers to prevent leaves and wildlife falling in. The pumps and boilers then need to be drained down in case of frost.
After a cool start to the summer the pool has had quite a lot of use with over 700 swims recorded although, in the hot summer of 2013, we recorded over 1000 swims.
The photo shows Beate Gordon hooking the winter cover to its anchors at the poolside. The cover is then stretched tight across the pool in a slow, shoulder busting process.
