Job Done!
The stone yard outside Moat Cottage has now been finished after nearly 4 months of much interrupted work. It was always going to be difficult to focus entirely on a job this size as so much goes on at Red House and there were bound to be gaps in the work time. Having laid a new drain to take the surface water away, we then began lifting, cleaning and sorting over 2000 stone sets which had to stored in the 40 square metre yard itself. The job also included removing an unnecessary inspection chamber which led to almost completely replumbing the water supplies to the surrounding buildings. Apart from a few unidentified bones the only artefact of interest that was unearthed was a silver plated salad fork (age unknown).
Now that it is finished, the one small joy for the workers (who are easily entertained) during the recent wet spell has been watching all the water flow effortlessly into the drain leaving not a puddle in sight!
