Handfuls of Newts
It is often noted that, while working at Red House, you must always tread carefully to avoid disturbing wildlife. Last week the french windows of the Garden House were being replaced and it seemed a good time to improve the small patio outside them that had become very uneven. On lifting up the the ancient clay tiles that formed the surface a "colony" of newts was discovered buried in the soil. All 24 of them were carefully picked up and placed further along the herbaceous border where they will hopefully find a secure and warm place for the winter.
The picture shows Simon Casterton's gentle hands holding the second "load" of newts before their relocation.
