Searching for the Crucifixion
Following an enquiry into the stained glass of the east window of the chapel, we began a search for a panel depicting the crucifixion. A reference occurs that, by 1622, there was a scene depicting the event with the figures of Mary, John, Elizabeth, Peter, Andrew and Paul looking on. The glass has been extensively changed since the 17th century with a major part being replaced by a memorial of the life of Sir Charles Slingsby who died in the great hunting accident of 1869. By taking photographs of each panel we could see more clearly if any fragments of the original scene remain. However it is quite apparent, particularly from the panel in the photo above, that prior to its 19th century restoration the glass was in a poor state of repair. The situation is made more complex as extra glass from the main building was introduced at the same time.
