Red House in the 17th Century
This is a painting of the Red House building completed in 1607. The original building on the moated site was demolished and many of the materials were reused in the construction of the new house. It is by no means certain that the painting is an accurate depiction of the building as it may have been an architect's vision of the finished building, no evidence has yet been found of the towers in the garden walls or the wall at the front. The estate was the country house of the Slingsby Family who were based at Scriven Park in Knaresborough. In the 1860's, part of the east wing of the house (on the right in the painting) was demolished and the present façade was built in front of the original.
