The View West from Red House
Looking west across the fields from the upper floors of Red House one can see (from l to r) the farmstead of Laund House (the site of an ancient manor) and, across the River Nidd a mile away, Nun Monkton Priory and Church. The Priory, which is set on the confluence of the Rivers Nidd and Ouse, was founded in the reign of King Stephen and his daughter, Maud, was the first prioress. The Church of St. Mary's is the old priory church and is renowned for its Anglo-Norman architecture. |
