The Moor Monkton Home Guard
or
Local Defence Volunteers

This picture was taken in front of the stable arch at Red House.
Back row (l to r): Jim Patterson, Jack Pearson (drowned in the river), Jim Davey (Pete Barnes' brother in law), Peter Hall (Cockhill Farm), Bob Pick, Deryck Horner (Debbie Horner's father), George Watson (Thickpenny Farm).
Middle row: Pete Barnes (Skipbridge Farm), Ray Wilson (Geoff Wilson's Father), Alf Noyce (worked at Rose Cottage Farm), Harold Heaton (Christine Naylor's uncle), Bill Dawsett (worked at Rose Cottage Farm), Jack Slater, Lord (?) Wenlock.
Front row: William Barnes (Skipbridge Farm), Gerald Watson (Thickpenny and Laund House), Herbert Noyce, Cyril Tebb, Isaac Webster (Rose Cottage Farm), ?, Tom Smith (Lodge Farm), Albert Jones (Moor Monkton).
Farming was a protected occupation so not many of the village men were called up. This explains why there is no war memorial in the village.
