Walking and Cycling around Red House

Red House is situated deep in the countryside of the Vale of York and is surrounded by a network of lanes, tracks, footpaths and bridleways all directly linked to the estate. This makes it ideal territory for a quiet stroll or a longer expedition to explore some of the local rural and historical landmarks. The proximity of the River Ouse and its lack of bridges does restrict the area to the south of its banks but it does itself provide some of the best walks and cycle routes. From April 2019 the Nun Monkton Ferry will be operatinga weekend and bank holiday service at the confluence of the Ouse and Nidd giving pedestrian access to Nun Monkton (Alice Hawthorn Pub) and Beningbrough Hall (National Trust).

The cycling opportunities here can only be described as superb! The land is flat, there are miles of quiet lanes adjacent to the estate and it is relatively easy to access the excellent cycle routes of York 6 miles distant. You can hire bikes from Spokey Dokey Bikes at very reasonable prices. They will even deliver and collect from Red House.

Important Note on Cycle Routes: To an experienced cyclist the routes around Red House could all be described as "easy to medium" but, for a family outing with small children, we would recommend certain factors be taken into account.
1. In prolonged wet conditions the bridlepaths by the river and across the fields can become very muddy.
2. The River and drainage ditches can flood the bridlepaths.
3. Make sure you have suitable bikes to cope with the mixed terrain which ranges from tarmac to short, steep muddy slopes.
Members of the estate staff are always willing to advise on the best route.
